Overview

Midori House is a commercial building in London that houses shops, cafes and similar units. The client needed an accurate architectural BIM model of the building and provided scans and PDFs as the source material.

Scan to BIM Services UK built the model in Revit at LOD 350, completing it within a turnaround of 60 hours across two business days.

PROJECT SCOPE

The Brief

The task was to create an architectural 3D Revit model of Midori House from the scans and PDF drawings supplied by the client. The model had to be built at LOD 350 and completed in two business days.

The following elements were to be modelled from the scans:

  • Walls, doors and windows
  • Floors and slabs
  • Ceilings
  • Columns and beams
  • Roof
  • Staircases and railings
  • Curtain walls
  • Sanitary fixtures
  • Fixed furniture
KEY CONSTRAINTS

Challenges

Unclear inputs

Extrusions and elements such as lighting and gutters were not clearly visible in the scans, so the team used its professional judgement to position them in the model.

Poor initial scans

The initial scans supplied for quoting were sloppy and internal decorative features were not visible in them.

Ceiling and window clashes

The ceilings clashed with the windows in the scan data. The team corrected this in the model.

Incorrect coordinates

The coordinates provided by the client were not suitable, so the model could not be set at the correct height above sea level. The team had to establish the right coordinates before the model could be positioned.

Short timeline

The full model was due in two business days, which left very little room to resolve gaps in the data.

Our Approach

Step 01

Review of Scans and PDFs

We reviewed the scans and PDF drawings to identify what information was available, which areas were unclear and where assumptions would be needed.

Step 02

Model Setup and Coordinates

Because the client’s coordinates were unsuitable, we worked out the correct coordinates and set the Revit model at the right location and level above sea level.

Step 03

LOD 350 Architectural Modelling

The architectural elements were then modelled in Revit from the scans. Where the scan data was unclear or missing, such as for lighting and gutters, elements were placed on the best available judgement, and the ceiling and window clashes were resolved.

RESULT

The Outcome

Scan to BIM Services UK delivered a complete architectural 3D Revit model of Midori House at LOD 350 within 60 hours, despite scans of low quality and missing information.

Although the building was small compared with other projects handled by the team, the quality of the inputs made it a demanding job, and it was completed successfully within the deadline.
